One of the most memorable episodes of Alvin and the Chipmunks was "Home Sweet Home", which aired on September 16, 1989 as part of the seventh season. In this episode, Alvin lies to his classmates that he will be singing on stage with Michael Jackson, the King of Pop. He then tries to find Michael and ask him to perform with him, but he ends up meeting a homeless man who claims to be Michael's manager. Meanwhile, Dave is worried about Alvin's whereabouts and tries to track him down.

The episode features two songs by Michael Jackson: "Smooth Criminal" and "Beat It". Alvin dances with Michael Jackson in both songs, using footage from his live performance at Motown 25: Yesterday, Today, Forever on NBC. The episode was made possible by Michael Jackson himself, who was a fan of the Chipmunks and wanted to be a part of the show. He visited the Studio City offices to meet the artists and producers, but he did not want to provide a voice for his character. Instead, he offered live footage from his concert and gave permission to use his songs.
